In the Innowood project, SMEs of the wood and furniture industry in the Austro-Hungarian border region team up for better networking and innovation
The furniture and wood industry plays an important role in western Transdanubia, thus in southern Burgenland and eastern Styria.
Eastern Styria is a hub for development and innovation in these industries. The development of the sector is strengthened on both sides of the border thanks to several economic developments and the organization of clusters. R&D&I-capacities and related academic institutions in the background already exist; however, cross-border approaches to tackle industry issues have only begun to develop. The special know-how cannot yet be accessed on both sides of the border.
SMEs in the sector have not yet opened up to applications of new technologies and innovations. Their readiness to cooperate with other companies is low. A lack of management attitudes, problems during inter-familiar changes in leadership, a lack of market-specific knowledge add up to a minimal readiness to open up to innovation. Here and there appear groundbreaking developments. At the same time the SMEs are faced with new customer expectations and changes in the macro-environment that lead to the surfacing of new products in new, more international market places. The knowhow that exists in the border region and the availability of basic building blocks allows realizing cooperations and reaching new, international markets.
Strengthening innovation-based international competitiveness of SMEs in the wood and furniture sector in the Austro-Hungarian border region is the comprehensive project goal. This goal shall be reached through:
· Surveying the options for cross-border, operative cooperations
· Extending knowledge regarding market situations, knowledge transfer
· Developing innovative niche products
· Developing operations that facilitate market entry
· Providing the technical infrastructure that promotes innovation
The project focuses on increasing added value on both sides of the border and serves as pilot for similar Projects.
