Simple Air conditioning systems – energy efficient, resource-friendly, affordable for residential renovation projects


At present the costs related to additional planning, installation, maintenance (filter swap, cleaning, fire safety) and operation (increased power consumption) are obstacles that restrain housing builders from investing in higher-end air conditioning systems. From their point of view the correlation between energy savings and customer satisfaction are negligible. 

In the past years experts agreed that it is ecologically worthwhile to install high-end air conditioning systems to allow for energy savings in regard to heating and comfort; such systems allow maximizing air and air quality in residential buildings. By now it has become evident that installing systems to optimize air quality in new structures has not lead to people installing more energy efficient air conditioning systems in residences that are being renovated.

Thus, simple, affordable, energy and resource efficient air conditioning systems that can easily be installed in the course of renovating existing residential structures shall be developed. Such systems use less material, are easy to install, maintain and clean. They use waste heat from ambient air, offer protection from moisture and ensure a minimum of air quality and comfort by remaining economically sound throughout their life cycle.


1.      Research of existing alternative air conditioning systems; advantages, disadvantages, key indices and assessment, data collection, definition of reference systems incl. benchmarks, drawing up set of criteria for new and continued developments

2.      Development of simple air conditioning systems, new components, additional optimization – alternative system solutions, including assessment

3.      Benchmarking and assessing promising systems by means of system simulation (for a selected reference framework) and laboratory testing (in the available climate chamber), LCA (life cycle assessment) and LCC (life cycle cost) analysis

Expected Results

Konkret sollen zumindest 3 alternative Lüftungssysteme mit Abwärmenutzung bzw. Wärmerückgewinnung für den Wohnbausanierungs-Markt entwickelt und beschrieben sein. Sie werden mit drei bestehenden Referenz-Lüftungssystemen nach Stand der Technik verglichen. Dazu werden Simulationen und Labormessungen vor allem für die thermische Behaglichkeit, das Zugluftrisiko und ggf. die Luftqualität (für Referenzräume) durchgeführt.

At least three alternative air conditioning systems with waste heat use or heat recovery shall be developed and described for the residential renovation market. They will be compared to three existing reference air conditioning systems in terms of technological features. Simulations and laboratory metering is done to identify indices for comfort, draft air risk and air quality (for reference rooms), as required.

The new mechanic air conditioning systems are assessed according to LCA and LCC.
